type 2 diabetes in children include: - Being overweight.
- Getting little or no physical activity.
- Family history. At least 75% of children with type 2 diabetes
have a parent, sister, or brother with the disease.2
Other factors that increase risk include: - Race. Children of Aboriginal, African, Hispanic, Asian, and
Pacific Island descent are at greater risk for developing type 2 diabetes than
white Canadian children.
- Being female. Girls are more likely to develop the disease than

pregnancy (gestational diabetes).
