Methysergide for cluster headache

methysergide maleateSansert

How It Works

It is not known exactly how methysergide works, but it may relieve pain by narrowing blood vessels in the head.

Why It Is Used

Methysergide may be used to prevent occasional (episodic) cluster headaches (especially in younger people).

Methysergide is not used to prevent daily or almost-daily (chronic) cluster headaches. Prevention of chronic headaches requires prolonged treatment, and long-term therapy with methysergide is not recommended. Taking methysergide for 6 or more months puts a person at risk for developing abnormal scar tissue (fibrosis) in the heart, lungs, or the back of the abdomen.

Methysergide is not widely used because it leads to the development of abnormal scar tissue (fibrosis) inside the body. It should not be used during pregnancy or in people with heart and blood vessel disease (cardiovascular disease).

How Well It Works

Methysergide helps prevent episodic cluster headaches in many people. It is especially helpful early in the course of the condition, but it may become less effective over time.

Side Effects

Side effects of methysergide may include:

  • Leg muscle pains and swelling.
  • Numbness and tingling in your hands, feet, and other extremities.
  • Chest pain.
  • Nausea.
  • Formation of scar tissue (fibrosis), often in the back of the abdomen (rare, even with long-term use).

See Drug Reference for a full list of side effects. (Drug Reference is not available in all systems.)

What To Think About

Methysergide is usually used off and on for only short periods of time to avoid side effects (especially scarring) and rebound headache.
