Who is affected by gonorrhea?Gonorrhea is a
sexually transmitted infection (STI). After steadily
declining during the 1980s and early 1990s, the Public Health Agency of Canada
(PHAC) estimates that over 9,000 new cases of gonorrhea were reported in 2005,
an increase of more than 90% since 1997. Gonorrhea is the second most reported
STI in Canada.1 Approximately half of all reported cases of gonorrhea are in people
15 to 24 years old. Since 1997, women ages 15 to 24 and men ages 30 to 39 have
shown the highest increase in rates of infection.2
