Purified chick embryo cell culture (PCEC) for rabies vaccination

Note: PCEC vaccine is not available in Canada.

Purified chick embryo cell culture (PCEC) is a vaccine for the prevention of rabies that has been approved for use in the United States. It also is available in some other countries.

  • PCEC can be used for pre- and post-exposure treatment for rabies and is as effective as the HDCV and RVA rabies vaccines.
  • PCEC is prepared in purified chick embryo cell cultures, so people who are allergic to eggs should not use this vaccine. However, if you have been exposed to the rabies virus while travelling and PCEC is the only vaccine available, it is better to accept PCEC and risk an adverse reaction than to get no vaccine at all.
