Limit alcohol use to help control blood pressure

Alcohol increases blood pressure and should be avoided or limited to reduce high blood pressure.

Drinking more than three drinks a day may increase blood pressure and the risk of stroke and can interfere with the effectiveness of certain blood pressure medicines.

Men should limit alcohol to two drinks [24 ounces (720 millilitres) of beer, 10 ounces (300 millilitres) of wine, or 2 ounces (60 millilitres) of 100-proof whiskey] per day. Women and lighter-weight people should limit alcohol to one drink per day.
