Hysterectomy: Beliefs about the importance of the uterus

Women have many different beliefs about the importance of the uterus. Your beliefs will influence your feelings about having a hysterectomy.

Some women believe that if they no longer have a uterus, they:

  • Will not be attractive.
  • May develop masculine characteristics, such as a deep voice or facial hair.
  • May lose their gifts of insight and compassion.

These are common beliefs. But in fact, most women report a better quality of life and sexual health, and are less likely to be troubled with depression following hysterectomy.1, 2 Hysterectomy does not make you develop male traits, nor does it change your insight or compassion.

Many women are concerned about the effect a hysterectomy may have on their ability to enjoy sexual relationships. Studies have shown that new sexual problems after hysterectomy are unusual. And, most women report better sexual desire and satisfaction after recovering from a hysterectomy. (This is compared to women who used medicine or other treatment for heavy bleeding.)1, 2

Many women say that after hysterectomy they:1, 2

  • Enjoy sex more.
  • No longer have symptoms such as heavy bleeding getting in the way of sex.
  • No longer have painful intercourse.
  • Have an increased ability to achieve orgasm.
  • No longer worry about becoming pregnant.
  • Have better sleep and overall health.

Talk with your health professional if you have concerns about the effect a hysterectomy will have on you.
