Who is affected by stroke

Each year, between 40,000 and 50,000 Canadians have a stroke.1

  • One out of every 4 peple who have a stroke die. Stroke is the fourth leading casue of death in Canada.1
  • Three out of every 4 people who have a stroke need rehabilitation because of brain damage cause by the stroke.1 It is a leading cause of long-term disability in Canada.
  • Men younger than age 75 are more likely to have a stroke. After age 75, stroke is more common in women.2
  • Women of all ages are more likely to die after having a stroke.
  • Blacks and First Nations people are about twice as likely to have a stroke as whites.3
