Who is affected by human papillomavirus (HPV) infection

Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection, which causes genital warts, is the most common sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by a virus. STIs are also called sexually transmitted diseases (STDs).

  • An estimated 10% to 30% of adults in Canada are infected with HPV.1
  • It is estimated that about 40% of sexually active adolescent girls are infected with HPV at some time. Most girls have no symptoms.2
  • An estimated 2% of sexually active young women in Canada have genital warts.1
  • Having sexual contact with an infected partner leads to an infection half of the time.
