A dilation and curettage (D&C) is a surgical procedure in which
the
cervix is opened (dilated) and tissue is removed from
the
uterus. D&C is the most effective treatment for a
miscarriage that is causing severe bleeding.
For decades, incomplete miscarriage has been treated surgically with
D&C or vacuum aspiration. This practise is based on the concern that an
incomplete miscarriage, in which a woman's uterus retains tissue, can lead to
excessive bleeding or infection. Recent research, however, supports the use of
close observation, called expectant management, as a treatment option for many
early, uncomplicated miscarriages.1
A D&C can be performed in a hospital or clinic using
general anesthesia or
local anesthesia and can usually be done on an
outpatient basis without requiring an overnight stay in the hospital.
Risks associated with D&C are rare, but they include:
- Possible reactions to anesthetic
medicines.
- Infection.
- Puncture (perforation) of the
uterus.
